For Bird Lovers
Kilauea Lighthouse
Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge
The Kilauea Lighthouse is, by far, the most extraordinary place to witness tropical avians in-action. As a designated National Wildlife Refuge for indigenous and endangered bird species, it is home to some of the largest populations of nesting seabirds found in Hawaii. Common sightings include: Tropicbirds, Boobys, Shearwaters, Frigatebirds and Albatross.
The scenic location is equally as stunning as its inhabitants. With a panoramic ocean vista and dramatic mountain backdrop, The Kilauea Lighthouse stands out as a must for all visitors to the island.
You are welcome to visit independently or to join a tour. Tours include a historic account of the lighthouse, as well as an educational wildlife experience. Additionally, the Visitor Center features interpretive displays, reading material, souvenirs and friendly staff. All proceeds further the charitable mission of Kilauea Point Natural Historic Association.

For Reptile Lovers
Makauwahi Cave Reserve
Mahalepu, HI
(808) 631-3409
A rare species of ancient tortoise are the gatekeepers to this geological portal back in time. The African Spur Thigh Tortoise is the only beneficial non-native animal on Kauai— contributing to the ecosystem, rather than destroying it. These gentle giants fill the niche of an extinct bird that used to eat invasive plant species. Taking its place, the tortoise eat only invasive plant species, leaving the native plants to thrive.
You can observe the tortoise in their sanctuary on any given day. Plus, you may even get to see hatchlings, depending on the time of year.
The Tortoise Sanctuary is an integral part of the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. With the intention to restore, preserve and protect native ecosystems, this impressive example of conservation is well worth a visit.
